Preventive maintenance is a planned and systematic action of review, control and monitoring of equipment. It is done in a planned and periodic manner, with the aim of reducing or preventing failures in machinery and equipment.
Corrective maintenance, on the contrary, is performed when there is already a problem, caused by failure, wear or incorrect operation. That is, it is a strategy of remediation, punctual, non-periodic and not systematized.
Both imply a stop in production procedures, since the machine cannot be in operation while it undergoes a review. However, in corrective maintenance, the pause is made in a time of urgency, without resources having been planned and are not always available. In preventive, the process is all previously elaborated to avoid damage to production, planning resources, parts, reducing intervention time and even cost.
The great difficulty of preventive maintenance for industries, due to the rapid technological advances, has been to have qualified labor and spare parts to meet this new demand. The maintenance workforce present in an industry should normally be much more generalist than it specifies, since it must meet a set of equipment and various processes. On the other hand, preventive maintenance by a specialized labor force tends to be more assertive and economical.
How to ally with these needs?
A growing practice in the market is the outsourcing of preventive maintenance by type of specialty, using highly specialized labor and with experience in applied technology. In addition to the technical gain, it is still possible to manage the necessary spare parts outside the factory, directly in this supplier, which can use the same item for more than one customer, thus reducing the cost of fixed assets in warehouses.
